Research and Fitness: A Journey Through Barre and Mat Pilates

For Dexter, a researcher at the National University of Singapore (NUS) focusing on breast cancer research, staying physically active is more than just a way to keep fit—it helps him navigate the highs and lows of lab (research lab!) life.

Dexter gravitates mostly towards Barre classes, especially Barre Beats, a fast-paced, dynamic workout that pushes him to the limit. “I die at the end of each class,” he laughs, “but it’s so exciting and fun. The sequences are always different and the variety keeps me engaged.”

Physically, Barre and Mat Pilates have been a game-changer for Dexter. “These workouts help me train those deep inner muscles that most of us don’t usually work on, but they make a huge difference in terms of stability,” he explains. “Since I started, I’ve noticed better performance in other sports too—running and swimming feel more stable and powerful.”

But it’s not just about building strength. For Dexter, the mental benefits of fitness are just as important. After a difficult day at work, the pressure to deliver can be overwhelming. “When nothing seems to work in the lab, Barre is my escape. It’s my time to unwind and just forget about the stress,” he shares. “It helps to lift my mood.”

What really clicks for Dexter is how his experience with fitness mirrors his approach to research. “In science, we often want quick results, but things take time. It’s the same with fitness,” he says. “Barre reminds me that progress doesn’t always come immediately, but when you look back, you realise how much you’ve achieved. It’s all about consistency, trusting the process, and letting the little things add up.”

One of the biggest reasons Dexter keeps coming back to the studio isn’t just the workout—it’s the community. “The social vibe in both the laboratory and the studio is a huge motivator for me. In the lab, we support each other as a team, and in the studio, I look forward to seeing the same familiar faces. The instructors and fellow students create an environment that makes you want to show up every time,” he says.

For Dexter, the balance between research and fitness isn’t just about managing stress; it’s about building a sustainable routine that nurtures both mind and body. And with Barre and Mat Pilates, he’s found the perfect way to stay focused and motivated–in the research lab and at Lab studios!
